Interview: Vintage Handmade /w Boneca Linda

Are you a vintage connoisseur? Well I've found the shop you've been looking for. At Boneca Linda (pronounced Bo'neka Lean'da) you will find an abundant supply of clutches, belts, camera straps and guitar straps (for the music lovers) to fit your needs. I had the opportunity to speak with Lucilia, founder of Boneca Linda, and hears what she had to say.

Q. What is the main site address for your business?
http://www.BonecaLinda.Etsy.com Boneca Linda, for those who love to play dress up!

Q. Tell us about the products you make and the materials you use.
I create Belts for young and old, Formal Clasp Clutches, Camera Straps and Guitar Straps to name a few. I love vintage! I try to incorporate vintage materials into my creations when possible. I think its fun to create something different and bring a touch of the past into our lives.

Q. How long have you been developing your craft?
I suppose I started sewing about 10 years ago. Wow, Time flies! I would make baby quilts for my friends.

Q. How did your craft evolve into a global store front?
Within the past year I joined Etsy and launched my Belts and Blankets line. At that time my creations were for children. Just over a year later I'm finding that my focus is now mainly on Adult accessories.

Q. What are the most effective ways you have promoted and marketed your Etsy business? What's your best marketing tip?
I have created a facebook business page but I really find that my best marketing/advertising comes from Twitter. My fan base is still growing. My current fans are a great boost to my Etsy views! http://twitter.com/BonecaLinda. Also joining the forums helps get your name out there amongst your peers on Etsy.

I've also joined a great team. The Busy Moms of Etsy team! http://busymomsofetsy.ning.com/ Joining a Team is a great way to build friendships, find mentors, and network with others like you!

Q. What mistakes have you made while building your Etsy shop that you wish someone had advised you NOT to do?
Mistakes, hmm. I wish I had learned to renew or list more often. I made the mistake of adding listings and letting them be. I've learned that you won't be found unless you keep your shop fresh and updated.

Q. Is your Etsy business a full time job or is it something you do in your spare time?
Well it's sort of both. My oldest daughter has just started preschool this fall and that allows me some additional free time. I am a full time stay at home mother First. I find that I spend many "full time" hours on my craft. They just aren't scheduled into a typical 9-5 schedule.

Q. What goals do you wish to accomplish within the next year for your Etsy shop?
I want to continue expanding my line. Who knows what's next! Continue building a fan base and hopefully see an increase in sales. I hope that within the next two years I can work on Boneca Linda full time and not have to get a day job outside the home.

Q. Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Lucilia and I live in New England with my family of four. I'm a proud Portuguese American who loves being crafty. It's hard to stop trying new things. Etsy says, find your niche... I think I've found it but I still want to try more!

Q. Outside of Etsy, in what venues do/have you sold?

I have sold at Craft Fairs in New England and to friends and family.

Q. What sets you apart from other sellers in your niche?
I think introducing vintage materials into my craft makes my items a bit more unusual. You have to work harder at finding the right textiles that will make an impact on your buyer.

Q. List one or more Etsy sellers which you admire? And why?
http://LetItBeLoved.Etsy.com, Let It Be Loved is a new Etsy shop that has been created by a friend, Eileen. She manages to balance family, sports, arts and more while creating beautiful jewelry at great prices. It's a juggling act and I hope I can do it all just as well!

Wonderful interview and I agree with the renewing issue. You certainly have to do it so that you don't get lost in the sea!
